Good day, Archons of Sparta! My name is FastRed. I have created a guide with some advice and information that will prove useful as you start out on your journey through the game.
Ten Top Tips:
It is my hope that with the following tips you will develop into a truly great player.
1. Send Friend Requests to your fellow Coalition Members. If you do, you will never be short of Friends who might be able to help you out in a bind, whether that’s repairing a fallen Tower or creating Hero Units. Additionally, Resources and Reinforcements exchanged between Friends will arrive faster!
2. Keep your Offensive Units in the Acropolis when they’re not being used. This is the easiest way to prevent a tragedy from occurring.
3. Raise the Level of your Agora. The Agora reduces the amount of time it takes to Construct and Upgrade Buildings in your City, making it an essential Building to fully Upgrade as soon as possible.
4. Upgrade the Level of your Acropolis. The storage capacity of your Acropolis needs to cover the capacity of your Barns and Warehouses. Anything over this will not be protected in case of Raids. As a result, keeping your Acropolis fully upgraded is of the utmost importance.
5. Upgrade all Buildings and Agreements. Buildings and Agreements help your City prosper in various ways. Make note of the ways in which you can utilize specific Buildings and Agreements to maximize their usefulness.
6. Raid early and often. The game allows you to Raid rival Cities up to 10 times a day. Every 2.5 hours, you’ll receive the ability to Raid an additional City. Raiding is essential to your success as it is a primary way to collect Resources. What do the most successful Cities have in common? They’re run by adept Raiders – that’s what! The key is to find abandoned Cities, which allow you to Raid them without costing you Units. Remember: make sure that your Acropolis has the storage capacity to hold the loot you bring back, otherwise the Raid is useless.
7. Siege wisely. With a maximum of three Sieges available, you need to carefully consider your targets. A good Raid can provide you with upwards of 50 thousand Resources, but a good Siege could bring you four thousand Resources PER DAY! As a result, it can be even more beneficial over the long run to do the latter.
8. Don’t let a Divine Quest pass you by! Completing Divine Quests is the easiest way to get Resources, Experience Points, and various in-game Items and literally only requires the touch of a button. Divine Quests appear three times daily, each occasion offering Archons up to eight new tasks. If you truly want a strong City, there is no easier way!
9. Utilize your Oracle. The Oracle is one of the most useful tools an Archon has at their disposal. Not only does the Oracle allow you to scout out nearby Persian Positions, it also helps you to find Emporia around your City. Upgrade it as much as possible to greatly expand its range, thus allowing you to find even more Emporia and Positions.
10. Build an Academy. This is another easy way to gain an advantage over your competition! The Academy allows you to use Scrolls of Wisdom that boost the speed, production time, and Grain consumption statistics of your Units. This makes the Academy a vital place for every Archon to spend some time in every day.
You’ll find a number of Cities of Level 31 to 53 whose names contain numbers or letters, e.g. EZQSJZV. These are Cities with lots of Resources that do not have any Units. In order to find these Cities, which are typically laid out in a line, you simply have to navigate around the Map. Once you find one of these Cities, you can just follow down the line, Raiding and enriching your own City.
Know Your Building:
Perhaps the most useful piece of information I can impart to new Archons is the importance of knowing your Buildings. What and how much do they produce? What other benefits do they provide to your City? One of the first things you’ll want to do as a player is to learn the value of your Buildings and how to maximize that value. Upgrading your Resource Buildings is one of the most important steps any player can take as Resources are vital for the continued development of your City and army. But in order to maximize your Resources, and Construct and Upgrade your Buildings in less time, you’re going to need to buy an Artisan. You’ll need Drachmas to do this, but there really is no better thing to spend Drachmas on. You’ll want at least one additional Artisan, but it helps to have two or three. Believe me, there are enough Buildings to Upgrade that even three Artisans will have plenty of work to do!
So let’s see what types of Buildings there are and what they do:
- Farms: provide Grain.
- Lumberyards: provide Timber.
- Forges: provide Bronze.
- Acropolis: guards Units and part of your Resources.
- Infirmary: Revives for free a certain number of your fallen Units. You can Revive more for Drachmas.
- Ephorate: accelerates the Signing of Agreements.
- Agora: increases your Building Construction/Upgrade speed.
- Granary and Warehouses: the former stores Grain, the latter Timber and Bronze.
- Oracle: can find new Colonies, Emporia, and Positions around your City.
- Port: increases your total number of Galleys, allowing you to Raid for more Resources. Also lets you Trade Articles and Resources.
- Harbor: increases your Galleys’ carrying capacity.
- Lighthouse: increases the speed at which your Galleys may safely travel.
- Hall of Heroes: allows you to Summon up to three Friends per day.
- Sanctum of Asclepius: allows you to Store, Use, or Mix Elixirs for greater Unit bonuses.
- Temple of Demeter: reduces your Units’ Grain consumption.
- Temple of Hephaestus and Temple of Pan: increases your production of Bronze and Timber.
- Temple of Hermes: increases your production of Timber and Bronze, but every time your City is besieged or raided the Temple falls back to Level 1.
- Military Buildings (Stable, Infantry Camp, Barracks, and Armory): allows Units to be trained. Certain Units require the Signing of particular Agreements first.
- Argentarium: Exchange Timber and Bronze for Denarii with which you can buy special Units.
- Fortifications: Gates, Walls, and Towers. Fortifications serve as your City’s Defense.
- Decor: each element provides various benefits to your City.
In addition to these Buildings, you have your Council of War which serves numerous purposes such as keeping track of Units you’ve to sent to Raid or Besiege rival Cities, Protectorates, and Emporia.
- Farms, Lumberyards, and Forges should all be Upgraded to at least Level 10 which is the minimum needed to Sign the following Agreements: Eleusis, Hephaestus, and Orchomenus.
- The Ephorate and Agora should be Upgraded to Level 20 as soon as possible, but you should keep them at a minimum Level of 12 at least, as it will expedite the Signing of Agreements and the speed of Constructing/Upgrading Buildings.
- The Acropolis defends your Resources so it’s a great idea to get this to Level 20 as soon as possible, or at least to Level 12.
- Both the Port and the Harbor affect the number of Resources you can take from rivals you Raid, so it’s important to get these Buildings Upgraded to as high a Level as possible. Level 20 is, as always, ideal, but Level 12 at least.
- As soon as you’ve Signed Eleusis, you should build the Temple of Demeter. Raise it to as high a Level as possible in order to most significantly reduce your Units’ Grain consumption.
Order of Agreements
You are completely free to pursue whatever order you like when it comes toSigning Agreements and you have a couple different options when setting out to do so.
One option is to Upgrade all of your Agreements in a straight line leading to Farsala to Level 20 or, if you prefer, you can take a detour and follow the line of Agreements from Samos to Sign Eleusis, Hephaestia, and Orchomenus.
Once you’ve reached Crete you’ve got a choice to make once again. My advice is to follow the line of Taras, which will lead you to Sign Argos, Dion, Troy, and Olympia. If you like you can Sign Argos and Upload Argos to Level 20, thus making your Thureophoroi very strong.
I would highly recommend Signing and then Upgrading Olympia to Level 20 so that you can train Promachoi. These Agreements allow you to train various Units, so determine if you are more Offensive or Defensive minded and then proceed accordingly.
To Raid or to Besiege? That is the question …
Raiding provides a great many Resources immediately, but besieging a City is a cost effective alternative in the long term as it allows you to return to your besieged Cities for more and more. A Siege is made up of two parts: 1) The Capture 2) The Retention.
Naturally, to lay Siege to a City you’re going to want to send out the best guys you’ve got. Really smack that Archon down and let him know who’s boss. Once you’ve totally stripped him of his dignity (and army) you’re going to want to withdraw those great Offensive Units who did all the heavy lifting and send in some Defensive guys to hold the fort down. Your role now is as defender of the City, and it is two fold. 1) To keep the Archon whose City this was down for good and 2) to protect this City from outsiders who might think it’s an easy target now that you’ve gone and stolen it.
You can easily locate the Cities you’ve Besieged by going to the Protectorates tab in your War Council. From there you can collect the Resources you’re harvesting. Keep an eye on your new Protectorate, particularly in the early days, as anything can happen!
I can’t stress this enough – Scout first! You might think that the City you’re trying to take is going to give up the ghost quickly, but one can never be too sure. Even if a City you’re thinking of taking down is of a vastly inferior Level to your own, DON’T RISK IT! Or, as I like to say, don’t be put out – Scout! But even if you do Scout, that Report might not necessarily be indicative of the situation on the ground in that City. Perhaps your spies came at a time when the City’s Defensive Units were in their Acropolis. Sounds strange, but it has happened! Or perhaps they were out somewhere, frolicking in other Cities with other Units. One just never can say. If you want to be really smart about it, I’d suggest Scouting and then waiting a day or two and then Scouting again, just to be sure. Or, if you can get to the City very quickly, go ahead and knock ‘em out as soon as that first Scouting Report comes back to you.
Now imagine, the tables have turned and now you’re the one under siege! What to do? You have two options. Either liberate yourself by putting out enough Offensive Units to take your City back or request help from another player. Either way, it’s up to you to make your City great again!
The Sanctuary of Asclepius is where you can Store, Use, and Mix yourElixirs. Elixirs are special elements that provide a bonus while in use. These Items are permanent and provide an increase to your Defensive and Offensive statistics. To improve Elixirs, you need to go to the Sanctum of Asclepius and combine 2 of the same Level, the result being a stronger Elixir.
To use an Elixir, simply place it into an open Activation Slot on the Activation Board. All the Elixirs you gain are stored in the cache at the Sanctum of Asclepius.
You can only remove Elixirs of Level 1-4 for free but Elixirs of higher Levels require the use of a special tool – the Caduceus. There are two types of these tools, Silver and Golden.
The Silver Caduceus works with Elixirs of Level 5-8 and the Golden Caduceus with Levels 5-12. The higher the Level, the better the boost to your Units’ Offensive and Defensive statistics!
You can only get Glory Points (GPs) by performing well in certain Global Tournaments. You can not buy GPs using Grain, Timber, Bronze, or Drachmas. Other players can’t steal your Glory Points if they Raid or Besiege you.
Attack or Defend Positions to unlock new Campaign Missions and get exclusive Rewards. There are a total of 24 Missions in a Campaign. By completing these Campaign Missions you can:
- Receive new Units for your army
- Get access to exclusive content
- Earn Experience Points, Glory Points, and more
How Campaign Missions Work:
You can find Campaign Missions in the “Missions” interface in the Oracle. To complete the Missions you have to Attack or Defend a particular Position.
Each Mission can be played twice: once with Offensive Units and once with Defensive Units.
To unlock higher Level Campaign Missions, simply go to the aforementioned tab and follow the instructions on the locked Missions.
The easiest way to get Resources in the game is by completing Divine Quests. Best of all, Divine Quests don’t require you to spend Units or Resources or anything else in order to participate. Divine Quests expire if not accepted in less than 8 hours, costing you the chance to collect the Reward.
To complete Divine Quests, click on the Divine Quests icon, choose the Divine Quest you want to complete, and click “Accept”. Divine Quests complete automatically after the given time. When finished, click “Claim Reward”. You can also use Drachmas to reduce the time it takes to complete a Divine Quest by clicking “Boost”.
There are three types of Divine Quests
- Individual: any Archon can participate in these Divine Quests.
- Coalition: only members of a Coalition can participate in these Divine Quests.
- Dominion: those who wish to participate in these Divine Quests must first activate Dominion Status.
Within each category of Divine Quests, all daily tasks fall into one of these five classifications:
- Class I Divine Quest
- Class II Divine Quest
- Class III Divine Quest
- Class IV Divine Quest
- Class V Divine Quest
Each Class differs based on its rarity and the time it takes to complete. The higher the Level of a task, the greater the Reward you’ll receive upon its completion.
A Coalition Attack is an attack launched by a maximum of three Coalition Members against a rival Pantheon or Coalition Capital. When making the decision to launch a Coalition Attack, it is important to remember the following:
- Pantheons can belong to very strong Coalitions, and unless you’ve got a death wish, it’s best to verify this before launching the Attack.
- Think through your attack beforehand and send only those Units best suited to the task.
Here are the Units to attack with:
It’s an age old question – what Units should you attack with? It is best to focus on four or five Unit types, specifically those whose corresponding Agreements have been Signed and Updated to the maximum Level. I would recommend avoiding Promachos and Cavalry Units because they cost an arm and a leg to train, including the fact that their Agreements are more expensive to Update. As a result, I would instead focus my efforts on training up Myrmidons and Hoplites. These are the fastest to train and their Agreements are also faster to Update.
Getting the most out of your Units
Attacking and Defending are ultimately what this game is all about, but knowing WHEN to do these things is paramount. Only have a few thousand in Resources lying around your City? DO NOT leave your Defensive Units out. It simply isn’t worth the risk. Saving a relatively piddly number of Resources is not worth the lives of your Units. You can get more Resources relatively painlessly, not so Defensive Units. It just isn’t possible to know what Units someone is going to attack you with, and the match-up might very well favor them – not you. Better to have your Units stowed safely away in your Acropolis, or with a fellow Coalition Member, and give up the Resources. It’s better to protect your Units as you will be able to use them later to benefit your Coalition!
Keep the Reports for anyone who has attacked you. You can always get revenge later – on your own terms!
